  • Corangi Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. It is at a distance of 18km from the Kakinada port and located between 16° - 30?to 17° - 00?N latitudes and 82° - 14? to 82° - 23?E longitudes. It was established on July 5, 1978, and named as Wildlife sanctuary by the government of Andhra Pradesh and the forest department as a part of Godavari mangroves. It covers an area of 235.7 sq.km (58,200 acres)

    It is the second- largest mangrove in India after Sundarbans in West Bengal, it is also known as an estuary. It is the most famous place and well-known to everyone as it has a great combination of entertainment and education, it is rich in its flora and fauna, and having wide wooden bridges, heavy growth of herbs and shrubs, wonderful weather with sunshine and cool breezes, boating facility to explore the beauty of mangrove forest, various rare species of mangroves and birds, pleasant environment. So it became one of the best places and known to be one of the favorites of eco-tourists.Mangroves protect vulnerable coastal lines from wave action because they hold the soil together and prevent coastal erosion, act as a barrier against the high waves, floods, cyclones. They also maintain water quality and filtering pollutants and catching sediments originating from land. They are a highly productive ecosystem and supply nutrients to aquatic animals, thus help in increasing the production of fish, prawns, crab, etc. They also provide products like timber for boat building, seedlings for food, etc. Here the mangrove plants have been categorized into 35 species that belongs to a group of 24 families and 120 species of rare birds. It provides different varieties of conditions for the habitation of a variety of animal production and it also contains a highly specialized community of plants associated with animal species that are not capable of surviving in any other situation. Mangroves are salt- tolerant forest ecosystems of tropical and subtropical intertidal regions of the world and they adapt themselves to the environment in which it grows.

    Corangi is rich in its flora as it has different kinds of plants like medicinal, herbs, shrubs, etc. The sanctuary in the estuary of the river Godavari has rich mangrove vegetation. The plant species that commonly found here are Avicennia officinalis, Avicennia marina, Avicennia Alba, Excoecaria agallocha, Rhizophora mucronata, ceriops decandra, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Lumnitzera recemosa, Sonneratia apetala, Rhizophora conjugata, Aegiceras corniculatum, Thespesia populneoides, and Hibiscus tiliaceus, they normally occur between high water level and near about mean sea level along the sheltered shores, estuaries, tidal creeks, back-waters, lagoons, marshes and mudflats. The mangrove plants exhibit interesting such as still roots, viviparous seedlings. Apart from the above plant species, some of the shrubs found in the sanctuary are Dalbergia Spinosa, Derris trifoliate, Acanthus ilicifolius, and Clerodendrum inerme and herbs like Sesuvium portulacastrum, Suaeda Maritima, Suaeda monoica, and Salicornia brachiatta. Grasses like Aeluropus lagopoides, Porteresia coarctate, and Myriostachya wightiana also found in the sanctuary.

    It is also rich in its fauna and fauna found in mangroves is unique. Coringa wildlife sanctuary has a wide variety of birds, because of the feed available in the backwaters of the mangrove forests. Many birds travel from other countries to Corangi. There are more than 120 species of birds have been reported, among them some of the commonly found birds in the sanctuary are little egret, pied kingfisher, pond heron, small blue kingfisher, cattle egret, black-capped kingfisher, reef heron, grey heron, night heron, little stint, sandpiper, redshank, red-wattled lapwing, crow pheasant, flamingos, seagulls, purple heron, white- bellied woodpecker, crested serpent eagle, scarlet minivet, Indian roller, brahmini kite, openbill stork, little cormorant, goose, parrot, oriental dwarf kingfisher, . Some critically endangered species like a white-backed vulture, long-billed vulture, oriental white ibis, painted stork, ferruginous pochard, and spot-billed pelican. Significant populations of waders and mangrove birds are also present. Apart from these avian fauna, the sanctuary also has animals like fishing cats, otters, golden jackals, sea turtles, pelicans, snipes, crocodiles, monkeys. Coringa wildlife sanctuary is esteemed for its saltwater crocodiles, the animal called water cat is protected in this year, it has 18km long sandpit where olive ridley sea turtles nest from January to march every year.

    During low tide, some of the areas are elevated mudflats having shrimps, small fishes, mollusks attract avifauna for feeding. The sanctuary is a part of the Godavari estuary and has extensive mangrove and dry deciduous tropical forests, mangroves may form extensive and productive forests in the sheltered coastal lines. The crowns of trees including trunk, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits provide niches essentially to birds, mammals, and insects. In a mangrove ecosystem the water bodies of the ocean/sea and river meet at a together point is the most beautiful sight and the boat ride on the estuary is pretty good to see the place where the Godavari meets the sea and they have arranged a wooden walk bridge into the mangroves is a natural delight, it also has tower to see the beauty of the forest. Pedal boats and 20-seater boats, the boating provides a stunning view opportunity with a very close glimpse to see the beauties of the mangroves for about 40minutes, various boating packages also available there. The cost of the boating may vary according to tourists’ interest and depending on the number of people. The entry fee also there and food, drinks, snack items are not allowed inside the sanctuary.

    The average temperature of the region may vary between 17°C to 40°C according to seasons and average rainfall is greater than 1000mm, it is well connected to state buses for many places, finally it became the favorite place to many people and also a place to photography and it is the good place to know everything about environment. It became must visit the wonderful place to biology students and zoology students to enhance their skills and well- protected mangrove forests, the utmost care has been taken by the Andhra Pradesh forest department. It became one of the standstill places in Andhra Pradesh wonders.
